1. •In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
My media product uses, develops and challenges forms and conventions of real media products because there are differences and similarities between my product and a professional product. My magazine mainly challenges the forms and conventions as on my front cover there is a mainly simple text throughout and usually in music magazines they try and use complex/fancy texts. The mode of address I tried to portray in my magazine was an informal point of view as stereotypically indie people do not use formal language. My contents page doesn’t really challenge any codes or conventions as I used an old NME magazine as my main inspiration and adapted that to match my magazine genre (even though they are similar) and obviously I used my own pictures and made up articles. My double page spread is very minimalistic which again challenges the codes and conventions of real media products because a lot of the time there is a picture bleeding across the two pages with text only in the bottom third the whole way across the two pages. My double page spread has the text on the left-hand side and a simple image on the right-hand page as I feel my target audience would be more interested if there was text and then a picture instead of both being on the same page. My magazine is fairly serious about the music yet informal in language so the readers would be interested in reading what the article is about rather than just looking at the pictures. I used different magazines as my inspiration to develop and use the forms and conventions. I used NME to develop them as I took a few articles and contents pages and made my magazine fit the conventions of this but I also added things that NME didn’t have such as the deal at the bottom of the page on my contents and also the pug containing the competition. As well as NME I used Q magazine for the inspiration to my double page spread as that was where I got the idea to keep it minimalistic from.
The psychographic that my magazine is aimed at is a mixture of explorer (those who seek
discovery and value difference, they are usually students) and the strugglers who are those who seek escape and are usually in demographic D or E.
